Canoeing

As the gathering place for three major rivers, Crawford County is rich in opportunities for canoeists.  Whether plying the backwaters of the Mighty Mississippi, the majestic Wisconsin, or the meandering Kickapoo; you will find the perfect setting for your canoeing adventure.  From broad river basins to secluded valleys, the Driftless topography offers a stunning backdrop to a tranquil day of exploration.

Boat Landings - Map (PDF 529kb)

Landings are available at regular intervals along all major rivers.  Access points are marked on our Crawford County Map, which can be ordered by email or calling toll-free: 866-452-7967.  Landings can be found on each river:

  • Mississippi River at: DeSoto, Ferryville, Lynxville, Gordon's Bay, Wyalusing State Park, and several locations in Prairie du Chien

  • Wisconsin River at: Bridgeport and Wauzeka

  • Kickapoo River at: Soldiers Grove, Gays Mills, Steuben, and Wauzeka (the Kickapoo is navigable on the upper portions served by outfitters, while the lower section remains more challenging, with numerous deadfalls obstructing the channel)

Crooked River Resort - Readstown

The Kickapoo River is the perfect paddling river. Both challenging and serene, its current is a mild 2 1/2 mph.  We provide you with canoes or kayaks, paddles, life jackets, seat cushions, directions and shuttle.  We can provide shuttle service for your own boat too.  We are open for paddling in April and into October or even November, depending on the mildness of the weather.
