General Information & Schedule

Brave the 4th Annual Kickapoo BRAVE (Bluffs, Rivers and Valley Event) Bicycle Ride starting and ending in Gays Mills, Wisconsin, on September 17, 2011.  Gays Mills is located along the Kickapoo River in Southwest Wisconsin, in the heart of the scenic Kickapoo Valley. The ride will start from Riverside Park in Downtown Gays Mills, located on Highway 171.  Riders choose between 20, 40, 60 and 100 mile routes.  All routes take cyclists through breathtaking scenery: ridge tops with distinctive panoramic views and deep, lush valley roads.  Enjoy rest stops at a cheese cooperative (with store), flower farm, and organic vegetable farm.  Several SAG wagons will be on hand, as well as a mid-route mechanized rest stop.

Afterwards, the “Educaterers” are serving up a harvest-time feast with locally grown food from Driftless Wisconsin Grown farmers.  Join us whether you’re part of the Kickapoo BRAVE Ride or not. Local beer and wine will be served.  Also, local food samples will be available from 1-6pm for both returning bicyclists and the public. The day will close with a 6pm raffle drawing for overnight stays at local Bed & Breakfasts.  Raffle tickets are available during the day of the event.

Routes

Riders will have a choice of four routes beginning and ending in Gays Mills.  The shorter 20-mile ride will stay in the river valley and take you to the Driftless Area Art Festival in Soldiers Grove, while the 62-mile (100 km) ride will take you over the ridge to Ferryville and the Mississippi River.  This year, we will also offer an intermediate 40-mile route, as well as a challenging 100-mile route that will take you into new territory.  All of the routes are paved, but there may be loose gravel on seal-coated roads. Note: the first 40 miles of the 100-mile route are unsupported by rest stops or SAG vehicle, but will then rejoin the 62-mile route.  Given the challenging terrain, the 100-mile route should only be attempted by those physically able to handle several steep grades.
