The Crawford County Farm to School project was formed in 2008 by a group
of teachers, parents, and food service staff to provide healthy food
choices for children in Crawford County by increasing the amount of
healthy, local foods used in school meal and snack programs. Programs
are currently underway at three sites in Crawford County including the
Wauzeka and Seneca K-12 schools, Bluffview Middle School, and BA Kennedy
School in Prairie du Chien where roughly half of the students are on
free/reduced lunch. The program inspires young people to embrace fresh
fruits and vegetables by engaging them in the process of growing food and
providing opportunities for them to taste foods that they might not
otherwise through school gardens, classroom tastings, fresh healthy snack
programs, and farmer visits. The Farm to School Program was supported in
2009 by two part-time Americorps volunteers. Goals for 2010 include
growing the number of school gardens through out the county, continuing
classroom education around “harvest of the month” food themes, publishing
monthly newsletters for parents, growing a fresh snack program at the
Prairie du Chien district, and expanding local foods on lunch menus.
This program is supported by many of the same farmers providing foods for
the BRAVE Ride Harvest Dinner!
